Conferences, Workshops and Speeches
| Summer Programme on Islam 19th – 25th July 2009 The Summer Programme on Islam (SPI) is an annual IIS residential programme that provides a structural, intellectual forum for a diverse group of Ismailis from different regions and professions to participate in an introductory study of Islam and to reflect on contemporary issues engaging Muslim societies.
The programme aims to: 1. Provide a social, cultural and civilisational introduction to Islam. 2. Situate the Ismaili tariqah within the larger Shi‘i and Sunni contexts of the intellectual and historical development of Islam. 3. Raise questions, reflect upon and engage in discussion on contemporary issues facing Muslim societies. To this end, the content of the programme will focus on specific themes and case studies which will enable participants to deliberate upon aspects of Islamic history, notions of authority and community, culture, faith and practice and issues related to tradition and modernity. We need an appropriate language with which to engage in national conversations. The programme provides an avenue to develop such a language, by bringing together a broad range of voices, including senior academics who are authorities in their own fields, with safe spaces to critically examine the dominant constructs of history, tradition and doctrine.” (SPI 2008 participant) |
