Professor Abdullah Saeed is Sultan of Oman Professor of Arab and Islamic Studies and Head of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Melbourne Institute of Asian Languages and Societies. He completed his PhD in Islamic Studies at the University of Melbourne in 1992. Since then, he has been actively involved in the development of Islamic Studies at the University of Melbourne. He has published widely on a range of issues concerning modern Muslim thought. His major texts include: Interpreting the Qur?an: Towards a Contemporary Approach (2005); Freedom of Religion, Apostasy and Islam (2004); Islam in Australia (2003); Islamic Banking and Interest (1996); and more recently Contemporary Approaches to the Qur?an in Indonesia (2005).
He is currently working on a project entitled ?Reconfiguration of Islam by Australian Muslims?, which is supported by an Australian Research Council (ACR) grant.
