The present volume honours Laudian Professor of Arabic (Emeritus) at the University of Oxford and Senior Research Fellow at The Institute of Ismaili Studies, Professor Wilferd Madelung, for his contributions to the fields of early and medieval Islamic history and thought. With some 15 books and edited volumes, 60 articles and chapters in various journals and collective volumes, 130 encyclopaedia entries and more than 160 book reviews, Wilferd Madelung has made major contributions to many aspects of medieval Muslim history and thought. With particular reference to religious schools and movements in early Islam, his studies, based on a vast array of primary sources, have enriched our understanding of almost every major Muslim movement and community – not only early Imami Shi‘ism and the later developments of Twelver, Ismaili and Zaydi Islam but also the lesser known aspects of Sunni, Khariji and the Mu‘tazili branches of Islam.

Wilferd Madelung’s scholarship, in terms of his knowledge of primary sources and the meticulousness with which he handles minute details, is unrivalled in modern times. Not only has he significantly broadened the field of Islamic Studies, he has also proposed new interpretations of important aspects of early Islamic history. Rarely has any contemporary Islamicist made as many original contributions as Wilferd Madelung to such a diversity of areas within the field of Islamic Studies.

It is with affection and admiration that many of his colleagues and students have, on the anniversary of his 75th birthday, contributed to a festschrift in his honour entitled Culture and Memory in Medieval Islam. The goal of the volume of essays is not to present a complete picture concerning culture and memory during the centuries of medieval Islam, but rather to highlight and explore aspects of the themes. Divided into three sections, the contributions in Part 1 focus on the transmission of knowledge, both generally and through specific studies. The second section deals with the acts of memorialising and remembering. The third section addresses the commemoration of rulers, dynasties and conquests.

Accordingly, contributors explore themes relating to memory, memorisation and commemoration in a variety of historical, legal, literary and architectural contexts. Among other things, they examine lists and maps as memory aids, the transmission of knowledge and traditions from medieval to early–modern times, the application of medieval notions of law and statecraft, and the commemoration of individuals, civilisations and dynasties in historical and literary works, and on coinage and monuments.

With contributions by Abbas Amanat, Said Amir Arjomand, Michael L. Bates, Joseph Norment Bell, Julia Bray, Farhad Daftary, Elton L. Daniel, George Makdisi, Martin J. McDermott, Josef W. Meri, Andrew J. Newman, Ismail K. Poonawala, Wada al–Qadi, Emilie Savage–Smith, Sabine Schmidtke, Pieter Smoor, Luke Treadwell, Paul E. Walker and David J. Wasserstein, this volume will not only appeal to scholars and students of early and medieval Islamic history and theology, but also to all those interested more generally in historiography and the development and diversity of emergent religious thought.
