Audiovisual Materials: Film, Video and Sound Recordings
Since 2004, the Library has been acquiring documentary, educational and feature films (in video and DVD format) dealing with a wide-range of themes and covering different parts of the Muslim world, including Afghanistan, Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Central Asia, Morocco and Tunisia. As these films are an important element in the educational activities of the Institute, especially for use in the Graduate Programme, an audio-visuals room specifically dedicated to viewing these materials was created in 2006.
In addition to its collection of visual materials, the Library also has audio recordings from the Holy Qur’an performed by professional reciters of various traditions and styles. In addition, the Library’s corpus of sound recordings of music (see the IIS Library catalogue on line) from different parts of the Islamic world is one of the finest, and includes Qawwali music from the Indian sub-continent, Sufi music from Iran and Turkey, as well as Gnawa music from North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
