Qur’an Scroll

Qur’an Scroll, Persia, Qajar, mid-19th century, ghubari script in black ink on paper

Written in minute ghubari script on finely burnished paper, this Qur’an in scroll format extends to about 5.75 metres (approx. 20 feet) in length. The text has been laid out to form patterns of alternating geometric and floral cartouches with selected verses of the Qur’an, including the famous 'Light Verse' from Sura al-Nur, in reserve. The chapter headings are in red and the margins are ruled in blue and gold. This Qur’an scroll, which has a beautifully executed headpiece in various colours and gold, was probably prepared for use by a traveller.
