The Institute of Ismaili Studies

Other Programmes

We offer preparatory programmes for Ismaili students who have not previously studied in English. We run the Khorog English Programme in Tajikistan and the Syrian Preparatory Programme in Damascus; and we make provisions for English language and preparatory training to promising students who do not have access to these training programmes.

Khorog English Programme

The Department of Graduate Studies offers the Khorog English Program (KEP) in Khorog, Tajikistan. This program is intended for students who already have basic English skills and is designed to improve English reading and writing skills to a level suitable for academic study at English-medium higher education institutions. The program introduces participants to a core curriculum devoted to the critical examination of contemporary issues through readings of texts of literature, travel accounts, political philosophy, and development. KEP also provides for the acquisition of requisite computer skills.

Since its inception in 1998, KEP has become a valued asset in the region. Over two hundred students from Central Asia have been through the programme. Many of them have enrolled at the Graduate Programme in Islamic Studies and the Humanities, and several have gone further to undertake doctoral research.

Syrian Preparatory Program

In conjunction with the Syrian Ismaili Institutions, the Department of Graduate Studies offers the Syrian Preparatory Program (SyPP) in Damascus, Syria through the British Council in Damascus. Like KEP, SyPP is intended for students who already have basic English skills. The structure and content of SyPP is similar to that of KEP.
