Dr Anjoom Mukadam is STEP Practicum Co-ordinator and Lecturer in the Department of Graduate Studies. She received her PhD and Master’s degrees in Sociolinguistics from the University of Reading and Bachelor’s degree and P.G.C.E. in Secondary Education from King’s College, University of London.

Dr Mukadam brings an interdisciplinary perspective to her research and teaching. Her main research interests are in the arena of ethno-linguistic and religious identities with a particular focus on Muslim youth in the West. These areas of study are by their very nature interdisciplinary and include areas such as migration and ‘diaspora’, adolescent identity formation, discrimination, ‘race’ and ethnicity, heritage language education, popular culture, multiculturalism and multilingualism.

Prior to taking up this position at the IIS, Dr Mukadam was Co-Director of the Evaluation Unit at the Centre for Excellence in Leadership at the University of Lancaster and a Research Fellow at the SOAS-UCL Centre for

Excellence in Teaching and Learning. She co-founded the Gujarat Studies Association and is its current President.

Dr Mukadam has presented various aspects of her research at numerous international conferences. Her publications include a co-edited volume entitled ‘Gujaratis in the West: Evolving Identities in Contemporary Society’ and several book chapters and journal articles. Her most recent publication is a co-edited volume entitled ‘Gujarati Communities Across The Globe: Memory, Identity and Continuity’.
