Selina Kassam Ramji designated as Education Coordinator at the IIS 
November 2007
Since June 2001, Selina Kassam Ramji (Class of 1997) has worked within the Department of Operations, Finance and Development (OF&D) at the IIS. She has undertaken projects in the Resource Development & Communications Unit and, more recently, served as the Alumni Relations Coordinator. After making a significant contribution in OF&D, Selina has accepted the post of Education Coordinator within the Department of Community Relations (DCR) at the IIS. More
 
New appointment to Alumni Relations 
November 2007
The Institute has recently appointed Nazneen Sachedina to the role of Alumni Relations Officer within the Department of Operations, Finance and Development. She previously worked with the IIS as an IT and Website Intern in 2002 and 2004. Nazneen completed an LLB in Law from University College London in 2006. She has previously worked for the Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations and the Ismaili National Council Secretariat in the UK. More
 
Fourth IIS Publication in Quranic studies series 
November 2007
The fourth publication in the IIS’s Quranic Studies Series is Dr Fahmida Suleman’s (Class of 1997) edited volume, Word of God, Art of Man: The Quran and its Creative Expressions which has been published by Oxford University Press in association with The Institute of Ismaili Studies (December 2007). More
 
First IIS Alumni Reunion 
November 2007
The reunion commenced with a welcome address by Mr Shiraz Kabani, Head of Operations, Finance & Development, which was followed by an informal session where participants were invited to share memories and experiences of their student days at the IIS. The afternoon continued with the keynote address, delivered by Dr Aziz Esmail, IIS Governor, in which he reminded alumni of their dual responsibility towards their faith and intellect. The session ended with a thought-provoking question and answer session. More
 
IIS Alumni Association bids welcome to the Class of 2007 
October 2007
10th September 2007 saw the graduation of eight members of the Graduate Programme in Islamic Studies and Humanities (GPISH), Class of 2007. The graduation ceremony took place at the Ismaili Centre in London, and was attended by Prince Rahim, Prince Hussain and Princess Khaliya. Over 250 guests, including academics, supporters of the IIS, as well as staff, students and alumni of the IIS joined the ceremony to honour the graduates. More
 
Asian Chapter Group meets in Dubai 
June 2007
The Asian Chapter Group of the IIS Alumni Association held a three day Annual Meeting in Dubai over the weekend of 19th – 20th April 2008. The keynote speakers were Mr Shiraz Kabani, Head of Operations, Finance and Development at the IIS, and Rizwan Mawani, Research Co-ordinator in the Department of Community Relations at the Institute. Representatives of the Alumni Relations Unit of the IIS also attended the meeting. More
 
IIS Alumnus facilitates Afghan education policy 
May 2007
Yahia is originally from Afghanistan and began his research on education in Afghanistan in 2000 by visiting three cities which had the largest concentration of Afghan refugees in Pakistan: Karachi, Rawalpindi and Peshawar. During this trip to Pakistan, Yahia observed the lives of Afghan refugees, studying their challenges and issues as well as their achievements with regard to the education of the younger generation. “This first visit to Pakistan”, Yahia says, “became a foundation for my future studies of the educational challenges of Afghan refugees in Pakistan.” The visit prompted Yahia to further his research, as part of his GPISH field project in 2002 and for his MSc dissertation in Educational Research Methodology in 2003 at The University of Oxford. More
 
Academic seminar for IIS Alumni held in Portugal 
July 2006
The four day seminar was held at the Centro Ismaili in Lisbon and focused on significant developments in Muslim thought in the contemporary period. Professor Mohammed Arkoun, an IIS Governor and a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Institute, commenced the seminar with an introductory address, setting the context for the discussions during the seminar, and delivered the keynote address on the fourth day, sharing his perspectives on a wide range of issues. More
 
IIS conducts workshop for its Alumni 
July 2005
The aims of this years workshop were to share with the alumni the vision and relevant intellectual perspectives developed at the Institute; to further enhance their critical thinking skills; and to engage them in discussion of historical and contemporary issues relevant to the Ismaili community in particular and Muslim societies in general. More
