Central Asian Studies: Objectives

The CAS pursues the following main objectives:

· Study the history and evolution of the Shi‘i-Ismaili tradition in Central Asia with a special focus on the history of the Ismaili communities in the modern period, including their cultural practices and intellectual heritage;

· Promote publications and make available materials in Russian and Central Asian languages which highlight the legacy and contribution of the Ismailis to Muslim thought and heritage;

· Collect oral and written materials on the history, religious practices and traditions of Central Asian Ismailis as well as to make available appropriate resources for scholars interested in the study of the mountainous societies of Central Asia;

· Organise forums, seminars and conferences where scholars studying cultural traditions of Central Asian Muslims can share their knowledge and develop a better understanding of these societies.
