Biography
Educated in Iran, Europe and the United States, Dr Farhad Daftary received his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley in 1971. He has held different academic positions, and since 1988 he has been affiliated with The Institute of Ismaili Studies, where he is Co-Director and Head of Department of Academic Research and Publications.
Dr Daftary is consulting Editor of Encyclopaedia Iranica, Co-editor of Encyclopaedia Islamica, a member of the Advisory Board of the Encyclopaedia of Islam (3rd edition), as well as the General Editor of the Ismaili Heritage Series and the Ismaili Texts and Translations Series.
An authority on Ismaili studies, Dr Daftary has written more than 150 articles and written and edited several acclaimed books in this field, including The Ismailis: Their History and Doctrines (Cambridge, 1990, 2nd ed., 2007), The Assassin Legends: Myths of the Ismailis (London, 1994), Mediaeval Ismaili History and Thought (Cambridge, 1996), A Short History of the Ismailis (Edinburgh, 1998), Intellectual Traditions in Islam (London, 2000), Ismaili Literature (London, 2004), The Ismailis: An Illustrated History (with Z. Hirji) (London, 2008), A Modern History of the Ismailis: Continuity and Change in a Muslim Community (London 2011), and Historical Dictionary of the Ismailis (U.S.A. 2011).
Dr. Daftary's books have been translated into Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Gujarati and numerous European languages.
In 2011, Fortresses of the Intellect – Ismaili and other Islamic Studies in Honour of Farhad Daftary was published with contributors including W.Madelung, P.E. Walker and A. Nanji.
