Dr Alessandro Cancian, Research Associate in the Institute’s Qur’anic Studies Unit, presented a paper at the 5th Biennial Convention of the Association for the Study of Persianate Societies held at the Maulana Azad University, Hyderabad, India.
Over sixty alumni from Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Pakistan, Singapore, Syria, Tajikistan and Tanzania convened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the annual meeting of the Asian Chapter Group of the Alumni Association.

The Institute’s Qur’anic Studies Unit hosted an occasional lecture by Dr Nuria Martínez de Castilla of the Complutense University of Madrid. The lecture, entitled Surviving the Fall of Granada: The Qur’an among Muslims in 16th Century Spain, focused on the methods used by Muslims in the Iberian peninsula to keep their cultural traditions alive.
The IIS is pleased to announce the publication of A Code of Conduct: A Treatise on the Etiquette of the Fatimid Ismaili Mission. Fifteenth in the Institute’s Ismaili Texts and Translations Series.
IIS Research Associate Dr Toby Mayer presented a paper at a workshop at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, USA entitled Greco-Arabic Rationalism in Islamic Traditionalism.
Dr. Yahia Baiza of IIS’ Central Asian Studies Unit presented a paper entitled, Madrasa Education in Afghanistan: A Choice between Reform and Obliteration at a conference on Reform in Islamic Education at Cambridge University.
Thirty IIS alumni from across Asia, Europe and North America came together in Istanbul, Turkey, in November 2011 to discuss the theme Contested Landscape: Shari‘a Today.

Drs Nuha al-Sha‘ar and Asma Hilali, of the Qur’anic Studies Unit at the IIS, attended the conference entitled Knowledge and Education in Classical Islam: Historical Foundations and Contemporary Impact at the University of Gottingen, Germany.
The Asian Chapter Group of the IIS Alumni Association held its three-day Annual Meeting in Dushanbe, Tajikistan from 18 - 21 September 2011.

Dr Nuha Al-Sha‘ar, from the Qur’anic Studies Unit at the IIS, organised a Pre-Conference Workshop entitled Cultural Responses to the Qur’an in association with the American Academy of Religion (AAR) Qur’an Group.
Alumni from across North America gathered in Montreal, Canada, for their annual Chapter Group Meeting at the end of June 2011. The meeting focussed on the theme of Interfaith Dialogue: Challenges, Skills and Strategies.
The Institute sponsored a panel on ‘The Bible and the Qur’an in Ismaili Sources’ at the International Meeting of the Society for Biblical Literature, which took place at King’s College, London.

This scholarly presentation of the text, Arabic critical edition and annotated English translation with its detailed introduction and footnotes, with a foreword by Nader El-Bizri, will make for fascinating reading for anyone interested in the shared history of philosophy, alchemy, and science.
Drs Yahia Baiza and Najam Abbas of the Institute’s Central Asian Studies Unit presented papers at the 12th biennial conference of the European Society for Central Asian Studies (ESCAS).
Several IIS scholars took part in the third World Congress of Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES), held in Barcelona from 19 to 24 July, 2010. This year’s Congress was hosted by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. IIS publications were also on display at the book fair accompanying the conference.
The Institute of Ismaili Studies sponsored a workshop entitled Approaches to the Qur’an in sub-Saharan Africa which took place in Toronto, Canada in May.
The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) is delighted to welcome Dr Nadia Eboo-Jamal as the Interim Head of the Department of Community Relations (DCR). Dr Jamal acceded to this role at the IIS in April 2010, when the incumbent Head, Dr. Shainool Jiwa started her one-year sabbatical.
Dr Eric Ormsby, Deputy Head of the Department of Academic Research and Publications, and Professor Wilferd Madelung, leading Islamic scholar and Senior Research Fellow at the IIS, were invited to speak at an international interdisciplinary conference entitled Islam and Rationality: The impact of al-Ghazali at Ohio State University, USA.
The IIS, in conjunction with the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts (IOM) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), organised an international conference in Saint Petersburg to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Wladimir Alekseevich Ivanow, the pioneer of modern Ismaili Studies.
