Dr. Ismail Serageldin is presently the Director of the Library of Alexandria. He was appointed in 2007 to the Egyptian Senate. Dr. Sergaldin had an illustrious career with the World Bank, including as Vice President for Environmentally and Social Sustainable Development.
He is the author and/or editor of over fifty publications, including Space for Freedom: Search for Architectural Excellence in Muslim Societies (1989), The Self and the Other: Sustainability and Self-Empowerment (1996, with Afaf Mahfouz), The Doubly Green Revolution: Food for All in the 21st Century (1997, with Gordon Conway), and Social Capital: A Multifaceted Approach (2005, with Partha Dasgupta). Dr. Serageldin is a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Cairo. He is the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates, and is affiliated with scientific, civil society and urban planning organisations the world over ? having also served on the Master Jury of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
