Venue: The University of Cambridge
Date: 17-20 July 2006
Organized by the University of Cambridge in conjunction with the IIS, this workshop will explore different approaches to the esoteric interpretation of the Qur’an, such as that practised by Sufis, philosophers, proponents of the Shi‘i hikmat tradition, Ismailis and Hurufis, and covering a range of historical periods, from the eighth century to the present day. It will highlight the diversity of Muslim approaches to the Qur’an and deconstruct the common contemporary assumption that it can only be read in one, exoteric way.
