Karam Alkatlabe received his BA in Architecture at Al-Baath University, Homs, Syria.
After completing GPISH (2020), he went on to do his MPhil in Architecture and Urban Studies (MAUS) at the University of Cambridge with a dissertation on "Rebuilding Syria: how will regional and international dynamics shape the urban reconstruction of Damascus? A case study of Marota City Project".
In 2020 Karam was awarded the IIS Doctoral Scholarship to pursue a PhD in Architecture at Cambridge University. His thesis is provisionally entitled "Rebuilding Syria: What is the future of housing and informal settlements in post-war Damascus in light of the current reconstruction process?" This research will focus on proposing tentative solutions to rebuild the housing structure of Damascus.
Previously, Karam worked as a Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Architecture at Al-Baath University in Syria, and as a Building Operation Supervisor for Aga Khan
Foundation (AKF) Syria between 2015 and 2017. He has engaged with different organisations to approach the housing crisis in troubled areas like Syria. Karam has received a scholarship from the Cambridge Trust and Wolfson College to contribute to funding the first year of his PhD programme at Cambridge.
