Jurisprudential discourses and rulings are often given precedence since they are seen to represent Shariʿa. But Shariʿa, as most Muslims see it, is entirely moral and can never justify any form of injustice. However, the understanding of Shariʿa as an ethical system and the consequences resulting from that understanding remain limited among ordinary Muslims. Even if we assume a widespread understanding of Shariʿa as an ethical system, we will still have several questions related to this ethical system with which we must grapple, including questions related to the nature and foundation of morality and the sources of moral judgment.
Understanding ethics and realizing its significance is one of the most salient topics in contemporary Islamic discourse. There is an urgent need to shift from the jurisprudential approach to the ethical approach in dealing with various normative issues, especially emerging ones. Serious engagement with questions of ethics in Islam requires formulating theories that connect and build on the ethical theories and norms found in various genres of Islamic disciplines in light of contemporary notions of justice and developments in moral philosophy.
An Islamic moral philosophy cannot be understood or developed by relying solely on sacred texts without examining the ontological and epistemological assumptions. Indeed, if we want to understand or critique any normative judgment, we will first need to understand the implicit assumptions of that judgment. Revealing the assumptions implicit in normative judgments, whether cognitive or metaphysical, is one of the issues dealt with — primarily — by kalāmFrom Arabic, lit. ‘Speech, discussion, argument’, translated as philosophical theology, refers to theological reflection using rational philosophical argumentation to study and express the content of the faith in a coherent… theologians.
Dr Maram al-Attar seeks to critique these assumptions through engagement with the concepts and theories of classical kalām (philosophical theology) while considering some contemporary approaches in moral philosophy.

Mariam al-Attar is a Senior Lecturer at the American University of Sharjah, teaching courses in Arabic heritage and Islamic philosophy. Her primary research interests include ethics in classical Arab-Islamic thought and modern and contemporary Arab moral philosophy.
Before her academic career, she worked as a physicist in hospitals in Jordan and the United Kingdom. Among her publications is the book Islamic Ethics: Divine Command Theory in Arabo-Islamic Thought (Routledge, London and New York, 2010). She has also published numerous articles and chapters on ethical questions, including ethics and gender equality in Islam, women and violence, moral pluralism, and food ethics and genetically modified foods.

مسائل في علم الكلام والأخلاق: مقاربة معاصرة
كثيرًا ما يجري تسويغ الخطابات والأحكام الفقهية بكونها تمثّل الشريعة. ولكن الشريعة، كما يراها معظم المسلمين، أخلاق كلها ولا يمكن أبدا أن تسوغ أي شكل من أشكال الظلم. ومع ذلك، فإن فَهْم الشريعة بوصفها منظومة أخلاقية والنتائج المترتبة على ذلك الفَهْم تبقى محدودة الانتشار بين عامة المسلمين. وحتى لو افترضنا انتشار فهم الشريعة بوصفها منظومة أخلاقية فسيبقى لدينا عدة أسئلة تتعلّق بهذه المنظومة الأخلاقية لا بدّ من الاشتباك معها — وهذه الأسئلة تتعلق أيضًا بطبيعة الأخلاق ومصادر المعرفة الأخلاقية.
يُعد فَهْم فلسفة الأخلاق وإدراك أهميتها من أهم القضايا في الخطاب الإسلامي المعاصر. وهناك حاجة ملحة تدعونا إلى التحول من المقاربة الفقهية إلى المقاربة الأخلاقية في التعامل مع القضايا المعيارية المختلفة وخاصة المستجدة منها. والتعامل الجاد مع قضايا الأخلاق يتطلب صياغة نظريات قادرة على التواصل مع النظريات والمعايير الأخلاقية المبثوثة في فروع المباحث الإسلامية والانطلاق منها، وذلك في ضوء التصورات المعاصرة لمفاهيم العدالة والمساواة.
لا يمكننا فهم فلسفة أخلاق إسلامية أو تطويرها، بالاكتفاء بالنصوص المقدّسة وحدها دون التدقيق في الافتراضات الوجودية والمعرفية. والحقّ أننا إن أردنا فهم أو نقد أي حكم معياري، فسنحتاج أولًا إلى فهم الافتراضات المضمرة لذلك الحكم. وكشف الافتراضات المضمرة في الأحكام المعيارية، سواء منها المعرفية منها أو الميتافيزيقية، من المسائل التي تناولها — في المقام الأول — علماء الكلام. من هنا تسعى مداخلتي هذه إلى نقد هذه الافتراضات من خلال الاشتباك مع مفاهيم ونظريات علم الكلام الكلاسيكي مع الأخذ بالاعتبار بعض المقاربات المعاصرة في فلسفة الأخلاق.

مريم العطّار هي محاضرة مشاركة في الجامعة الأمريكيّة في الشارقة، حيث تدّرس مساقات في التراث العربي والفلسفة الإسلامية. تشمل اهتماماتها البحثية الرئيسة الأخلاق في الفكر العربي الإسلامي في العصور الكلاسيكية، والفكر الأخلاقي العربي الحديث والمعاصر.
قبل مسيرتها الأكاديمية، كانت تعمل كفيزيائية في المستشفيات الأردنية والبريطانية. ومن مؤلفاتها كتاب “الأخلاق الإسلامية: نظرية الأمر الإلهي في الفكر العربي الإسلامي”، روتليدج، لندن ونيويورك، 2010. كما نشرت العديد من المقالات حول الأسئلة الأخلاقية بما في ذلك الأخلاق والمساواة بين الجنسين في الإسلام والمرأة والعنف ومسألة التعدّدية الأخلاقية، وأخلاقيات الغذاء والأغذية المعدلة وراثيًا.

نُها الشعّار حازت على درجة الدكتوراه في جامعة كامبريدج، وهي باحثة مشاركة أولى في معهد الدراسات الإسماعيلية في لندن، حيث تركّز على تلقّي القرآن في الأدب العربي القديم، وعلى تقاليد التفسير القرآني وأخلاقياته، كما تدرّس التاريخ الفكري والفكر الإسلاميين وكذلك الأدب العربي في الجامعة الأميركية في الشارقة بمرتبة أستاذة مشاركة. من أعمالها الأخلاق في الإسلام: الصداقة في الفكر السياسي للتوحيدي ومعاصريه ) 2015 ، بالإنكليزية(، والكتاب الذي اشتركت في كتابته مع باحثين آخرين عن الله والعالم: طبعة نقدية عربية وترجمة إنكليزية لرسائل إخوان الصفاء 49 – 51 )مطبعة جامعة أكسفورد، 2019 ، بالإنكليزية(،كما حرّرت كتاب القرآن والأدب: تشكيل التقاليد الأدبية في الإسلام القديم)مطبعة جامعة أكسفورد، 2017 ، بالإنكليزية( وكتاب مصادر ومقاربات ) 2013 ، بالإنكليزية(. وتقوم حاليًا بإعداد طبعة عربية وترجمة إنكليزية لمخطوطة قبطية تحتوي على مناظرة بين راهبين مسيحيين وراباي في بلدة تمي الأمديد في مصر. نهى الشعّار خرّيجة الأكاديمية العربية الألمانية للباحثين الشباب في العلوم والإنسانيات.
