The Institute of Ismaili Studies is pleased to announce that Mr Habib Motani, a member of the IIS Board of Trustees, has been reappointed as a non-lay member of the Legal Services Board (LSB) for a four-year term beginning 18 April 2026.
The Legal Services Board is the independent body overseeing the regulation of lawyers in England and Wales. It is independent of government and the legal profession and oversees the approved regulators, which themselves regulate lawyers. Appointments to the Board are made by the Lord Chancellor in accordance with the Legal Services Act 2007 and are regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
Mr Motani is a senior legal professional with more than four decades of experience. He qualified as a solicitor in 1980 and currently serves as a Consultant to Clifford Chance LLP, where he was a partner for over 30 years in the firm’s banking and finance practice. He is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Law.
At the IIS, in addition to being a Trustee and a Governor, Mr Motani serves on various Board Committees, including as chair of the Jamati Programmes Committee. Mr Motani is also a Trustee of The British Institute of International and Comparative Law and The Aga KhanA title granted by the Shah of Persia to the then Ismaili Imam in 1818 and inherited by each of his successors to the Imamate. University (International) in the United Kingdom. Additionally, he serves as a member of the Steering Group of the Canary Wharf Multi-faith Chaplaincy.
