The Insitute of the Ismaili Studies (IIS) is pleased to announce that applications for the Farhad Daftary Doctoral Scholarship are now open. The deadline for applications is 31 March 2026.

Farhad Daftary Doctoral Scholarship

Each year, IIS awards Doctoral Scholarships to suitable candidates interested in pursuing doctoral level research in areas aligned with the Institute’s core research priorities. Fields of particular relevance include:

  • Ismaili Studies
  • Wider Shiʿi studies
  • Qurʾanic studies
  • Muslim ethics
  • Education
  • Manuscript studies

The scholarship is also open to other areas in which Islam can be analysed in one of its various manifestations, including historical, theological, philosophical, legal, educational, ritual, and cultural perspectives.

The Institute’s Doctoral Scholarship Programme was established in 1997. Since then, more than 58 scholarships have been awarded. The programme serves as a platform for intellectual advancement, career development, and long-term capacity building within the field of Islamic studies.

How to Apply

To apply, please download and complete the application form and submit it together with the required documents to scholarships@iis.ac.uk by 31 March 2026. All documents must be submitted in PDF format.

Applications must include:

  • Cover letter
  • Updated CV
  • Personal Statement of Commitment
  • Copies of graduate level academic transcripts, including a copy of your Master’s diploma
  • Copy of letter of acceptance to a doctoral programme
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Writing sample
  • Doctoral research proposal
